Random Wanderings

The plan for today was to go and look at some of the Gaudi architecture in the city. The air was pleasantly cool as we set off on what should have been a 15 to 20 minute walk.

But Barcelona is a fascinating place, and sights and views pull you down side streets. It was impossible to travel in a straight line, and before long I didn't know where I was or in which direction we were going

Not that it mattered, there was so much to look at in the old part of the city.

Which is how we were drawn to the Palau de la Musica, a modernist early 20th century building constructed to provide a home for Catalan choral singing but now promoting all types and styles of music

We took a guided tour of the building - definitely worthwhile. The sights are impressive enough in themselves, but so much better when their purpose and meaning is explained

The Valkyries in full flight

The Muses, giving inspiration to the artists and performers

After lunch we continued on our Gaudi quest, and did manage to get to our destination

The wide streets in Barcelona are full of trees, so buildings gradually reveal themselves. It is difficult to see the whole building at once

And it is not just Gaudi that has been at work here. So much of interest, almost every building has details and embellishments. No square boxes here

We ate outdoors in the evening, watching life in the Placa Reial, with bats fluttering in the night sky

Later we went back to our favourite bar. I was a bit nervous about this, thinking it wouldn't live up to first visit. But thanks to Vera's ability to draw people into conversation it was every bit as good. Tomorrow we have promised to meet Gian and Gabriella in their respective coffee bars
