Introduction

I have had many holidays in Italy but have only been to mainland Spain once, staying in Nerha.

I have long felt the need to remedy this shortcoming. Spain looks to have everything I want from a holiday destination: Good Food; Good Wine; History; all in abundance

The idea of a rail trip also appeals, a slower and more civilised form of travel. Vera also gave me a European rail travel guidebook as a Christmas present. It was such a good present that I received an updated edition the next year.

With so much to choose from, there was a real danger of being bewildered by the choices on offer and ending up doing nothing. So somewhat arbitrarily this trip is based upon route 21 in the book: Historic Spain

This starts in Barcelona and over the next two weeks heads slowly south. We break the journey in Valencia and Cordoba. At Cordoba we diverge from route 21 and go to Malaga, which as well as looking a fantastic destination also means we can visit friends who have moved from the UK to Spain
